THE VOLVO D16 ENGINE
Volvo’s ultra-reliable D16 delivers the power and torque needed to move large payloads with ease, even on steep grades. Five power ratings are available from 500 to 600 hp. The first, a heavy-spec XE16 package rated for combination weights up to 143,000 pounds, was designed specifically for the North American heavy-long combination vehicle (LCV) market. The second XE16 package combines exceptional fuel efficiency with outstanding performance for five-axle tractor-semitrailer combinations up to 80,000 pounds. Sold in VNL daycabs, sleepers and new VNX, it’s the perfect choice for line haul and heavy haul operations.
EXTRA POWER FOR BIG LOADS AND STEEP GRADES
Volvo’s new 2014 GHG-certified (Greenhouse Gas) D16 engine provides a fuel efficiency increase of up to 0.7%, thanks to innovative solutions to reduce friction. This includes a new low tension oil scraper ring and clutched air compressor that saves fuel by completely declutching from the engine.
THE VOLVO D13 ENGINE
The Volvo D13’s efficiency, power and light weight improves reliability and operating costs, while meeting EPA regulations. Fourteen power ratings are available, from 375 to 500 hp. Two XE ratings, six Eco-Torque and three Dual-Torque ratings provide “dual-personality” torque output for customers who desire the fuel economy of lower torque with the strong performance of higher outputs. Sold in VN daycabs and sleepers, the VHD and the VAH, it is the perfect choice for line haul, regional and vocational operations.

Introducing Volvo’s 2014 GHG-certified (Greenhouse Gas) D13, the most fuel-efficient D13 ever, saving you up to 3% in fuel costs. Not only is the 2014 D13 more fuel efficient, but it is also easier to service! We designed an all-new two-piece valve cover that is easier to handle.
THE VOLVO D11 ENGINE
The Volvo D11 is a fuel efficient, lightweight engine designed to improve reliability and minimize cost of operation. Five power ratings are available in the range from 355 to 405 hp. The D11 delivers performance competitive with larger engines with an impressive 405 hp and 1,550 lbs. ft. torque. It’s also a lighter solution for maximizing fuel economy in regional, less than truckload (LTL) and distribution situations. It’s available in VN daycabs, VAH auto haulers and VHDs making it perfect for regional operations.
LIGHTWEIGHT, HEAVY-DUTY PERFORMANCE
It costs a lot less to run a D11 engine these days. With Volvo’s new 2014 GHG-certified (Greenhouse Gas) D11 engine, you’ll see a fuel efficiency increase of up to 2%. The Volvo D11 is a fuel efficient, lightweight engine designed to improve reliability and minimize cost of operation.
THE VOLVO I-SHIFT TRANSMISSION
Volvo’s I-Shift transmission continues to be the benchmark for powertrain integration, offering the convenience of an automatic with the performance of a manual. I-Shift helps drivers stay in the right gear, no matter the payload or terrain, which improves fuel efficiency. It provides faster or skip shifting during critical load-pulling scenarios and a quick rocking response in adverse conditions. And I-Shift virtually eliminates the time a driver spends shifting, which reduces fatigue and allows more time for safely monitoring the road ahead
AN AUTOMATED MANUAL TRANSMISSION WITH DIGITAL INTELLIGENCE
Volvo’s I-Shift automated manual transmission makes every driver more fuel efficient by ensuring the right shift at the right time. Standard in every Volvo truck, I-Shift’s intelligent electronics constantly monitor factors like road grade, speed, weight, and engine load to help keep the truck in the most fuel-efficient gear possible.
I-Shift uses intelligent electronics to continuously monitor grade, speed, weight, and engine load, shifting when necessary or holding a gear—whichever saves more fuel. So regardless of experience or training, I-Shift helps every driver become more fuel-efficient.
I-SHIFT STANDARD
Available in overdrive and direct-drive models, the standard I-Shift transmission combines the ease of an automatic, the efficiency of a manual, and the intelligence to handle any road and every load. Standard on VN and VAH models, the I-Shift not only keeps fuel costs down, it helps slow driveline wear, extends transmission life, and lowers maintenance costs.
I-SHIFT FOR SEVERE DUTY APPLICATIONS
Take on heavy loads, uneven terrain and frequent shifting typical of heavy-duty vocational duty cycles with the Volvo I-Shift for severe duty applications. Standard on Volvo VNX and Volvo VHD models with heavier weight ratings, the severe duty I-Shift combines the efficiency and productivity benefits of the Volvo I-Shift with hardened gears and other hardware for even greater uptime and component life.
